REMEDY tells how long she hatched the idea of making Alan Wake 2 when developing Quantum Break and Control
At this stage, you should not surprise you that the worlds of Alan Wake 2 and Control are connected. Perhaps the Remedy Connected Universe universe became known only in 2020, when the AWE extension put Jesse Faiden on the path of the brute Falls incident, but the Remedy leadership of Remedy thought much longer longer than the universe. In fact, it was the stubborn efforts of the Alan Wake 2 launch studio that led to the creation of games such as Quantum Break and Control.
"Sam tried to make this game for 13 years", – Says Kyle Rowley, who was the leading designer of Quantum Break 2016, and now he is the game director of Alan Wake 2. "Each time we started a project like Quantum Break, it began like Alan Wake 2 and moved to Quantum Break. Control began as a kind of game associated with Alan Wake 2, and moved to Control. But this time we will do it. The longer this continues, the more confusing Alan becomes. Therefore, I think that now is just a suitable period of time to get it out and talk about it".
The original Alan Wake today recall as one of the best games for Xbox 360 – the exclusive of 2010, which has blurred the boundaries between supernatural horror and action -packed action. The game became a favorite of critics, but did not receive those sales that were required for the immediate sequel. The unsuccessful offer of Microsoft ultimately made Remedy switch attention to Jack Joyce. After Quantum Break, the creative director of Remedy began to think about how to help Alan Wayke get out of a dark place again.
"I always felt that we would get here. I have never abandoned this idea for many years", – Says Sam Lake. "I was really very excited and happy to do Quantum Break, I am happy to do Control, and all this, but. I always felt that we could not leave the poor guy in a dark place. We are in debt in front of him".
Looking back at this path after so many years, it is interesting to see how the decisions made by Remedy on this path determined what way she is now going on. Take, for example, Alan Wake 2, in which there are two protagonists and parallel storylines: the FBI agent Saga Anderson, who is investigating a series of ritual killings in Bright Falls, which occurred 13 years after the mysterious disappearance of the famous writer, and Alan Wake, who is trying to write his own The path from a nightmare dark place. But Alan Wake 2 is not the first time that Remedy plays with the concept of two heroes.
"After Quantum Break, the idea of two heroes in the sequel [Alan Wake] arose", – says Lake. This is an interesting reflection, given that several main characters initially participated in Quantum Break – instead of learning about Bet Wilder’s attempts to survive the end of the time in the exposition, Remedy wanted to allow us to experience this from our own experience.
When Remedy began to create a prototype of the Alan Wake 2 version after completing work on Quantum Break, the idea of two heroes was already born, but in the end the team went in a different direction, starting to experiment.
"As a result, we brought the elements of gameplay into the game, which made it even more action, as well as a less linear one – a kind of idea of metroid", – Lake says. "Ultimately, we looked at her and said: "This is not entirely similar to Alan Wake". As a result, these design ideas were continued, and Control was born so".
Of course, the fact that Remedy ultimately switched her attention to the creation of a new game does not mean that she left the idea to ever return to Alan Wake 2.
We have never refused the idea that Control will have an Alan Wake element, which led to the idea of taking a specific step forward with the idea of Remedy Connected University. We knew that they were in the same universe, we simply did not want to say anything in advance – it was a surprise that needed to be discovered. Then, when it became known, we began to discuss ideas, and for AWE DLC we could make a full -fledged crossover to create a continuation of Alan Wake 2.
Considering that Alan Wake 2 has not come out of the head of the DeMEDY developers for more than ten years, as a full of hints at the wider universe of the Remedy Connected University will be this game when it will be released on October 17? As Lake says: "In this experience we have to discover a lot for ourselves "meta". More than ever before. We are crazy".
